Frequently Asked Questions

  • The user guide can be downloaded here. We also have a Setup & Tutorial page that’s a helpful resource as well.

  • Yes! We have a helpful Facebook group where system updates are posted as well as ideas, feedback, and questions from other SketchBot users.

  • We recommend 1.0mm tip markers, ideally not to exceed 1.5mm, but ultimately it’s up to your preference. Felt tip markers work best, but you’ll want to ensure that the marker and paper combination you’re using is fast-drying. The 1.0mm STAEDTLER Lumocolor Universal Pen is a good option to start with.

  • Most 4in x 6in media (matte or glossy) will work great except DNP paper (we’ve found DNP paper has smudging issues with most markers). Testing your pen and paper combination for compatibility and drying time before your event is recommended. Pre-printed media from Vistaprint or this Canon photo paper are great options.

If you’re using the spring-loaded paper platform, paper with matte finish on both sides may be difficult to slide out of the platform.

Important Note: If you’re using the nano tape paper platform, the gloss or semi-gloss side of your paper should never be applied to the nano tape. This will ruin the nano tape and it will need to be removed and replaced.

  • A basic photo booth software is included. Advanced features will be at an additional cost.

  • Yes, you can place your branding image into the ‘watermark’ folder in the SketchBot folder on the desktop of your laptop computer. Further instructions can be found here.

Please note that some complex logos cannot be sketched and would instead be more suited for pre-printing on the takeaways.

  • The SketchBot software purchase includes one SketchBot software license, one SketchBot platform and base, a starter set of 4”x6” paper (about 20 pieces), 2 pens, one year of support and licensing (PC software, iPad photo capture app, and hot folder), access to all promotional materials (video & images), and support for up to five simultaneous SketchBots.

After the first year, an annual subscription is required to renew the license. This subscription includes periodic updates and improvements to software to make SketchBots smarter, faster, and more accurate.

  • Quite easy! To get a head start on familiarizing yourself with the system, feel free to download the setup guide here. We also have a training video in the works.

  • No, you as licensee are not able to transfer to another individual or entity.

The software can be deactivated on an old laptop and reactivated on a new laptop by our team. Please contact us if you’d like to start this process. Transfer limitations may apply.

  • You can first try some mild soap and water - typically this works well and can restore the nano tape’s adhesive qualities. If not, new or additional nano tape can be purchased through Amazon here.

Note: The gloss or semi-gloss side of your paper should never be applied to the nano tape. This will ruin the nano tape and it will need to be removed and replaced.

  • Additional or replacement nano tape can be easily purchased through Amazon here.

Note: The gloss or semi-gloss side of your paper should never be applied to the nano tape. This will ruin the nano tape and it will need to be removed and replaced.

  • You can purchase additional bases and platforms here.

  • The SketchBot software will need to be installed on a PC. You can read more about the software and the recommended PC requirements here.

The MosaiCapture app can be installed on your iPad to capture photos (selfie mode or photographer mode). Our iPad app is an easy option. The user setup guide can be found here.

  • The software can support up to five simultaneous bots.

  • People can be photographed using our custom iPad app or a hot folder if you’d like to use your own system or DSLR camera. Photos submitted through the hot folder will need to be square orientation. See the full user guide here.

  • While there are a lot of great opportunities for add-on enhancements, the items needed to run the system are the SketchBot software, a portable phone or iPad for taking photos, a PC laptop, and at least one SketchBot. For more information, see the full user guide here.

  • Yes, you can certainly pre-print your custom branding/logos in the bottom section of the takeaway. A helpful template can be downloaded here.

The SketchBots can also draw you custom branding. Instructions to configure sketched branding are located here. This process requires several steps, some trial and error, as well as some technical and design abilities. Also please note that not all branding can be sketched by the SketchBots. Alternatively, Picture Mosaics offers this configuration at an additional cost.

  • Yes, we do offer an email takeaway as an add-on feature. Currently this feature would need to be configured by the Picture Mosaics team at an additional cost.

As of Q1 of 2024, the SketchBot Web Portal allows emails along with a number of other great sharing and branding features.

  • We've developed two specialized platforms to hold the paper at the perfect height for the bots to draw.

The spring-loaded platform holds up to 150 4x6 takeaways. Once a sketch is finished, slide the takeaway out through the front of the platform, leaving a new blank takeaway in place for the next sketch.

The nano tape platform is strong enough to keep a single takeaway in place while also allowing the paper to be easily lifted off. If paper (or another material) is stuck to the nano tape, place the block paper side down into a bowl of water and let it soak for an hour, then the stuck material should peel off.

Note: The gloss or semi-gloss side of your paper should never be applied to the nano tape. This will ruin the nano tape and it will need to be removed and replaced.

  • Our bots have held up for many events and are still running strong. If your bot is drawing squiggly or jagged lines, you can try perfoming a recalibration to fix the issue. We have a helpful tutorial video along with a how-to PDF.

If should you have any issues, the bots come with a warranty from the manufacturer, and they will be able to assist you if the robot gets damaged.

  • The bots come in a great foam protective case that is great for shipping. We recommend packaging the robots in their foam box and then packaging that within a cardboard box.

  • It takes a SketchBot about one minute to complete a sketch from when the photo is taken to when the user peels off the paper. So the theoretical max number of sketches would be 60 per hour per bot. This calculation can be used to scale up the bots depending on the event.

  • You do not need an internet connection to run the SketchBot software. However, depending on your photo capture method you may need a local network. For example if you are using iPads to capture photos you can leverage a local router to connect the iPads to the bots.

We typically recommend hardwiring your system to avoid any possible disruptions that could occur with a wireless system. We have a helpful tutorial video along with a how-to PDF.

  • If you’d like the software to be valid and usable on more than one laptop at the same time, multiple licenses will need to be purchased.

  • The delivery timeline is about 1 to 2.5 weeks from the time you purchase your software and confirm your base and platform selections, depending on your location. Customs clearance can extend this timeline.

  • There are a few remedies that may solve this issue. We’ve outlined them in the tutorial video here.

  • Unfortunately, it would be difficult to test the system without having the base and platform in hand as these are specifically designed for optimal placement of the sketch paper.

  • Your purchase does come with a starter set of 4”x6” paper (about 20 pieces) and 2 pens. More 4”x6” paper and pens can be purchased any number of vendors (Amazon, VistaPrint, etc). Popular choices include glossy, matte, glitter, branded, etc. Be sure to test your pen and paper combination compatibility, along with compatibility with the platform. More details can be learned here.

  • Yes, that is correct. Although the first base and platform are included with your software purchase, the value is set at $100 for customs.

  • The “pro-tip” overlay image gives a quick positioning instruction to help improve the sketch outcome. This can be hidden through the camera settings in the iPad app.

NOTE: This angled method works best if your iPad app is set to use the Gamma training model.

  • These are different training models for the SketchBot software.

The latest training model, Delta, was introduced with the most recent software update. We feel this model is ideal for ‘straight-on’ photos

The previous training model, Gamma, may produce better output if the subject’s head is turned at a very slight angle.

The ability to toggle between Delta and Gamma models can be found within the settings in the SketchBot Manager app.
